The passing of aunt Charlotte
Came as a surprise.
Even though expected was her death
My great aunt is no longer here.
Alone I feel bereft.



Vs. 1
I’m stranded in the States
I’ve got to get away.
I book an early morning flight
To London, from L.A.
My sister called to tell me
Our aunt had had a stroke.
The doctor said there was no pain,
At least, that’s what they hoped.

The flight was long and bleak.
Some tears began to flow
As childhood memories filled my mind
Until we reached Heathrow.
I paused to hire a car
Drove North on the M.1.
School holidays at Charlotte’s house
Were such a lot of fun.

Her house was by the sea
In need of some repair.
A backdrop for the countless games
We’d crafted with such flair.
I turned off the M.1
And drove to Charlotte’s home
I stopped the car and got my bags
Inside, I felt alone.

The lawyer read the Will
My sister shed a tear.
The seaside house and her effects
We both agreed to share.
The funeral day was fixed
For Friday in three weeks.
But when at last the day arrived
The rain came down in sheets.

All huddled round the grave
Umbrellas held aloft
The coffin slowly lowered down
The ground was wet and soft
We drove off to the wake
A room above a pub.
Old ladies eating vol-au-vents
All trying not to blub.

Another era looms
A glimmer of new hope
I'm in an optimistic mood,
I think that I can cope.
And thus it slowly dawns
Just like the rising sun
As far as generations go
I’ve moved up one more rung!
