about
Turning 70 in 2015, I grew up as a boy in late 1940s UK austerity. And now it is back to bloody austerity once again, it would seem!
lyrics
It seems that I've turned seventy
In times of great austerity
But before I swap my car for a hearse
I have to tell you the late '40s were much worse
And the early '50s, were really not much better
But at least back then we still some times wrote letters
And smoking cigarettes was a manly thing to do
Something to think about as we ate our thin bone stew
And, yes, I'm turning seventy
Another year is gained.
And it's bloody austerity,
Yes it's bloody austerity once again.
A childhood world of ration books
Of itchy clothes hung up on hooks
I had some metal cars, called Dinky toys
And Meccano was the rage for little boys
We took the trolley bus to go to town
And lots of folks had bikes to get around
And all the kids played out, running round the street
'Cos to see a motor car, was almost like a treat.
And, yes, I'm turning seventy
Another year is gained.
And it's bloody austerity,
Yes it's bloody austerity once again.
I worked in Ipswich on Cliff Quay
I smelt the stink of chemistry
Then industrial accounts had no appeal
In Corby new town where they furnaced steel
I went back home and learned to be a bank clerk
But the world of finance failed to win my heart
It took me six whole years to gain my Ph.D.
Then thirty years flashed by, while I taught psychology.
And, yes, I'm turning seventy
Another year is gained
And it's bloody austerity,
Yes it's bloody austerity once again.
What would retirement have in store.
I took a course and learned to draw
And I streamed my music to the World-Wide Web
Thirteen hundred one hour shows, live from my head
Wrote my autobiography - Part One.
Wrote two ebook novels for Amazon.
Did a massive garden make-over, all the ivy's dead
Gonna build an evening sun deck, gonna make a garden shed.
And, yes, I'm turning seventy
Another year is gained
And it's bloody austerity,
Yes it's bloody austerity once again.
